Singing for Their Food (Dixie Chicks)

Sometime in 1989 (gosh, over 20 years ago now), my mother and I stopped into The String Bean restaurant in Richardson, Texas, to tuck into its brunch menu of good ol’ Southern comfort food. We picked a table right next to some gals who were setting up to be the musical entertainment for the morning. An upright bass, a couple of fiddles, acoustic guitar, and a banjo – not exactly the gear associated with the bands I was listening to back then. I figured that I’d just have to grin and bear it while diving into my chicken-fried steak,...

Farewell Bob Roosen

Today, the co-founder of World Orphans, Bob Roosen, peacefully passed into eternity. It’s hard to summarize a life so well lived, so I won’t even attempt it here. Bob has changed – and continues to change – many thousands of lives, both now and forever. Thousands of former orphans now have homes and families because of his tireless work and dedication to this most precious of causes. Many other thousands have found hope in the Father to the Fatherless due to the nature and structure of the work we do – rescuing and caring for orphans through local indigenous...

It’s fine to abuse young girls, as long as you’re a great film director

Here’s a pretty powerful commentary from Johann Hari of The Independent, following this week’s news that Roman Polanski won’t be extradited to the United States for his 1977 conviction for rape of a 13 year-old girl. *** NOTE: Although edited, some readers might find Mr. Polanski’s comments below quite offensive. It’s fine to abuse young girls, as long as you’re a great film director The Swiss government has admitted “national interests”...

TRAFFIC JAM (Sarah McLachlan & Sheryl Crow)

I got back from Portland a couple of days ago and enjoyed my time in the press conference and green room area at Lilith Fair. Meeting Sarah McLachlan and Sheryl Crow were certainly highlights. Sarah has such a sweet gentle spirit about her and was gracious with her time. She has a soft voice and low-key manner about her. Sheryl, on the other hand, was a bundle of energy with her newly-adopted son, two-month old Levi James, who was decked out in a little red hoodie. Very cute kid! Levi is the second boy adopted by Sheryl, following in...
